June 1-7, 2014 is Childhood Hunger Awareness Week in Broome County.

Hunger prevents children from reaching their full potential. It’s an epidemic that’s threatening America’s future and seriously impacts children throughout the Southern Tier. The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is a proud member of the Broome County Child Hunger Taskforce to increase awareness for childhood hunger in Broome County.

The Broome County Child Hunger Taskforce is raising awareness in the community about this critical problem by declaring the week of June 1-7, 2014 Childhood Hunger Awareness Week in Broome County.

Join us at 6:00pm Thursday, June 5th for a FREE screening of A Place At The Table in the Binghamton High School auditorium.

Special thanks to WSKG Radio & Wegmans!
Consider these facts:

  •    Approximately 23% of Broome County children under the age of 18 (~9,400) live in poverty.
  •    More than 8,000 (21%) children in Broome live in households that struggle to put food on the table
  •    Of the more than 13,000 Broome children enrolled in free/reduced price meals (47% of the all students), only 14% (1,893) received meals during the summer
  •    Nearly ½ of all people who use SNAP (Food Stamps) are children

Partnerships between non-profits, health care, education, business and government all play an important role in solving this issue. Special thanks to the following organizations for their commitment to the fight against childhood hunger and support for Broome County's Childhood Hunger Awareness Week.
