Legacy Foundation brings produce to Groton kids

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier has received $4,000 from the Legacy Foundation of Tompkins County to support the Kids’ Farmers Market at the Groton Library.

The Groton Kids’ Farmers Market program provides free fruits and vegetables in a farmers market-style set up to allow kids to “shop” for produce they like or haven’t tried yet. The markets are held at Sykes Park Free Summer Meals site, and during the school year at the Groton Library on East Cortland Street in Groton. Kids can explore the wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that are available. They get to try new foods, learn about the fruits and vegetables they already like, and pick out produce to take home to share and enjoy with their families. The markets are held on Wednesdays to align with the weekly Groton Community Meals served at the Groton Library. These events are encouraged as a time for neighbors to come together to share a meal and talk about food and encourages an effort to create a community where everyone has the means to access healthy, nourishing food.

The Food Bank strives to build and sustain hunger-free communities throughout the Southern Tier. The Legacy Foundation of Tompkins County is a private foundation committed to improving the quality of life in Tompkins County by supporting not-for-profit organizations. The Legacy Foundation’s endowment is funded through donations and bequests from community members.
