On Tuesday, August 15th, United States Representative Nick Langworthy, along with New York State Assemblymember Phil Palmesano, Assemblyman Chris Friend, and New York State Senator Tom O’Mara paid a visit to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. The visit highlighted the critical issue of hunger in the Southern Tier and across the nation.

The representatives were greeted by members of the Food Bank’s Senior Leadership Team, including new President & CEO, Mark Bordeau, VP of Community Impact, Randi Quackenbush, and Chief Operating Officer, Dave Patterson, who led them on a comprehensive tour of the facility located in Elmira, New York. The Food Bank of the Southern Tier, a key player in the region’s fight against hunger, provides critical support to local food pantries, soup kitchens, and community organizations that serve those in need.

During the tour, the representatives observed the inner workings of the food bank, including its warehouse, production areas, and administrative offices. They engaged in discussions with the staff, and volunteers present, gaining insight into the challenges they face and the innovative strategies they employ to provide assistance to thousands of individuals and families.

As they concluded their visit to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, they reiterated their commitment to supporting initiatives that alleviate hunger such as the 2023 Farm Bill, and initiatives that create a more resilient and equitable food system. Their visit serves as a testament to the power of elected officials working in partnership with community organizations to effect positive change in the lives of those facing food insecurity. And goes along with the mission of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, which is, to work together to build and sustain hunger-free communities throughout the Southern Tier.

The service area for the Food Bank of the Southern Tier includes Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins Counties, covering nearly 4,000 square miles. The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is a member of Feeding America and depends on 500 volunteers each week to complete the mission of fighting hunger in the Southern Tier. If you would like to volunteer you can find out more information on the volunteer page.
